Aim
To improve the health and environment of people in Nottingham Health District by integrating voluntary and statutory, health, environment, social care and economic policies and practices.
(Nottingham Health District includes the local authority districts of Broxtowe, Gedling, Nottingham, Rushcliffe and Hucknall within Ashfield.)
Background
Health In Your Environment (HIYE) is a voluntary sector forum which brings together groups involved in health, social and economic regeneration and environmental issues. It has a particular focus on the connections between health and the environment, where health is defined not just in terms of ill-health but in terms of well-being and quality of life.
The forum was originally formed in 1996 to establish a voluntary sector voice within Nottingham Health Action Group (a multi-sector group working to improve the health and environment of local people across the health district). It has contributed valuable ideas and a voluntary and community sector perspective to a wide range of different working groups within Greater Nottingham and through this work has instigated a wide range of action.
Our work falls under two main headings:
- networking and consultation with a range of partnership
bodies;
- events and activities to raise awareness of issues and
spread good practice.
HIYE holds a unique position in the Greater Nottingham area in terms of the range of groups that are members. Because of this there has been increasing interest
from the statutory sector: the many changes within local government and the health services in the last couple of years mean
they have to consult widely with the public and consider issues
in a more integrated way, and HIYE is well placed to help with
this.
