Climate Action Network Nottinghamshire
CANN is a coalition of local voluntary and community organisations - environment and development groups, faith groups, humanitarian organisations, women's groups, trade unions and others
- working together to achieve more effective action on climate change.
Beyond the Basics lectures
This is a series of lectures for everyone who wants to learn more about the many aspects
of the climate change crisis and the various measures that are being promoted as
solutions. Each one will focus on a particular topic, with presentations from
leading speakers in the field followed by opportunity for discussion.
It's being organised by Health In Your Environment and supported
by CANN. The series has its own website at www.hiye.org.uk/climatechange.
The
first lecture is Living within a Carbon Budget on Monday
30th April, 7.30pm. The speakers will be Dr Alice Bows from the
Tyndall Institute of Climate Change Research and Jonathan Harris
from the Directorate of Public Health - East Midlands. It's being
hosted by Nottingham City Council at the Council House, and chaired
by its Chief Executive Michael Frater. Admission is free but booking
is recommended (see site for details).
CANN Social
This took place on Saturday 17th March. After a short introduction to CANN by
Callie Lister, we heard from agronomist Ahmadou from Senegal (ably
translated by Christian Aid!), talking about the changing climate
in that part of Africa and projects being undertaken to adapt to
it, like teaching local communities to make stoves that use fuel
wood more efficiently. It's sobering to hear that the Sahara Desert
is expanding southwards at 3km per year.
Next
came an excellent buffet provided by Organic Bites. Then Adrian
from Global Action Plan talked about the Ecoteams project and led
us through a couple of exercises to look at our own CO2 impacts
and test our knowledge of transport issues. We also heard about
a number of upcoming events, so keep checking the calendar - and
do send details of anything you're organising.
