Action ideas

Here's a range of things you can try and resources you can use.

Subscribe to the CANN mailing list for more ideas, and events in Nottinghamshire - Tel: 0115 950 8516, Email info@climatenotts.org.uk

Find out why nuclear is not the answer but decentralised energy is part of the solution - watch the Greenpeace film www.greenpeace.org.uk/whatarewewaitingfor

Put pressure on the Government to introduce a climate change law. There is enormous support for a new climate change law - over half of MPs and thousands of people across the country have already taken action in support of The Big Ask, which is asking the Government to pass a new law to make sure we reduce our CO2 emissions by 3% every year. Everyone can write to their MP now at www.thebigask.com

Notts Nosh - your guide to fresh locally produced food and drink in Nottinghamshire. Think global, shop local. For free copies of Notts Nosh, contact FIG on 0115 9788212, or email fig@groundwork.org.uk. See www.groundworkgreaternottingham.org.uk/fig/ for more tasty ideas.

Calling all teachers - 'Shout about climate change' is Friends of the Earth annual activity project for 11-13 year olds. Over 1,800 schools and youth groups took part in 2005 - and you can too! Order your pack from learning@foe.co.uk, or download from the website http://www.foe.co.uk/learning/educators/resource/index.html, or phone 0207 490 1555

Rethink! Airport expansion policy - aviation is the fastest growing source of climate change emissions. The Government has given the green light for airport expansion across the UK. Ask the Government to rethink its policy - see http://www.rethink.airportwatch.org.uk/ for more details or phone 020 7248 2227 for more details.

No M1 widening - The Department of Transport has announced its intention to widen the M1 from Leicester to Leeds. You can't build your way out of congestion - road widening and new roads simply encourage more traffic. Road transport is the single biggest contributor to the UK's output of climate change gases. The governments own studies confirm this. Want to stop the motorway madness? See http://www.nowideningm1.org.uk/index.html or Phone: 07896264519

Want to know what your local authority is doing to recycle your waste? Find out more from - www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/home/environment/recycling.htm or Tel: 0115 977 2019. E-mail: waste.management@nottscc.gov.uk

Form a neighbourhood EcoTeam - Small changes to our homes, our communities and our lifestyles can make a real difference.  Although you may think that the environmental impact of your home is pretty small in global terms, think of the difference it would make if all of your street or everyone in your area took some steps towards reducing their impact. Want to know how? Global Action Plan is here to help - see www.globalactionplan.org.uk. Contact Details: Julie Jackson, EcoTeams Project Manager Tel: 0115 978 4697 or 07905 534 580 Email: nottingham@globalactionplan.org.uk

Food Waste Action Guide - Collection and composting of food waste can make a real contribution to the fight against climate change, and removing food from the waste stream will also help reduce the pressure for new incinerators. If you would like to lobby your council to offer food waste collections to households, please see the new action guide from Friends of the Earth.
